Dialog Kopi #10

A Cup of Sweet Espresso

"Espresso should be with sugar." a person said it loudly and proudly accross from my table. They were both men. They talked about coffee for hours while I was trying to work on my last paragraph of my personal statement. I was working on it, for the past three weeks before the deadline tomorrow. I was going to apply a master degree abroad. Assuming I might be able to see the world.

I ran out of my cafe latte. I looked around and there was a slight glance from a man that was sitting quite far from mine. Both of my big eyes caught those small eyes. He was then focusing again on a device in front of him, a tablet, I believe.

"I am gonna order a cup of espresso then." I mumbled. I thought I needed more power for my brain. This conclusion of the personal statement was killing me.

I then walked through a bit crowd. This coffee shop was one of the famous shops in town. I came here early, and not realising that this could be this crowded. I stood at the queue. I looked into the menu above the cashier bar. A plate of brownie would not hurt.

"Hey Miss, may I help you?" greeted the cashier woman.

"Ah, yes. I would like to have an espresso and a brownie. The one with the peanut one."

"Sure, anything else?" Her smile adorned on her face. Her long hair was tidied up in a pony tail. Her firm face and big eyes were both a perfect combination and I did not wonder she became a cashier. She was fast.

"No. That would be all." I answered.

"And the order is under the name of," She hang up her question.

"Olivia." I answered.

"Ms. Olivia. Okay, that will be $10."

"Okay. Here you go."

"Thank you. We will call you once the order is ready."

"Thank you!" I came back to my seat and I did not realise that I bumped into the man I found his glance before.

"OH, I am sorry." I almost hit his foot. He smiled and held both my shoulders so that I would not fall. I smiled awkwardly and came back immediately to my seat. I sighed and looked at to my laptop again that I locked. I opened it but I tried to take a glance to the man that I bumped into. He stood up firmly. His body was a perfection. He was wearing a brown leather jacket, a pair of dark blue jeans, and a pair of slip-ons shoes. I looked at my laptop again and I took a glance again to him and he looked at me smile. His heart face shapes and small eyes with little lip caught me again. We stared to each other for a little while and I sent my weird smile again to him. He threw his face and ordered to the cashier.

I came back to my laptop and tried to write the first sentence of my personal statement's conclusion. I was interested in taking the food technology and I planned to take it in Germany. What I heard, another best food school was in France and Ireland. They were both would become my second and third options. I then continued to my second sentence, when I almost pressed my 'dot' button, I looked up. It was the guy. The guy that I stared at, and so did he.

"Hello, excuse me. Sorry, are you Jane?" He asked with the smile.

"Uhm, no. I don't think so. I am not Jane."

"Oh my God. You look a lot like her. I thought you were my friend."

"Oh, sorry. I was not her."

"And you are?" There was a long pause before I answered, "Olivia." I smiled at him. He gave his hand and I shaked it.

"Nice to meet you, then Olivia. I am Oscar. Are you alone here?"

"I am."

"May I join you?"

I smiled, "Sure." He then sat in front of him. He looked around twice before he sipped his,

"Espresso with sugar." It was like he could read my mind. I wondered what he ordered.

"Oh, I have never thought about it." I exclaimed and he giggled.

"It is a common thing." He answered and by the time, we talked about anything else, including my goal to take the master degree abroad.

"What do you do?"

"I do a service job."

"What kind of it?"

Before he wanted to answer, there was a ring on his phone. He did not pick it up. He smiled and asked permission to leave.

"Really nice to talk to you, Olivia." He left.

**

It was a beautiful sunny day with a little breeze of the wind. Olivia was spending time on the campus park, where she finally got the chance to continue her study. She was reading one of her material books and her presentation materials that she had printed out. She was narrowing her eyes on some difficult materials to understand.

"Hi." Somebody was standing beside her and she looked up. The face looked familiar.

"Oscar, remember?"

"Oscar? Yeah, I do. What are you doing here?" Olivia asked and smiled. Oscar was sitting next to her now, smiling. It was a weird smile for Olivia as he was looking around as well.

"I was just coming here meeting some friends. But, he never made his promise."

"Really?" Olivia wondered. Oscar was still looking around. She  was confused and narrowed her forehead. She came back to her materials for her presentation when suddenly she heard a gun shot.

"Oh my God!" Shout Olivia. Now, Oscar was holding her hand and her materials fell down under the park bench. She was looking around and she closed both of her ears, "What is that?"

"That was my friend." Oscar answered and made a quote by quote sign. Olivia got more confused about what was going on. Oscar held and pulled Olivia's right hand and they both ran to the hidden area. The campus was not saved anymore and Olivia was still wondering inside about the situation.

"Oscar, please tell me!" Olivia stopped her step and Oscar faced her, with fear. "Oscar." Olivia called him again.

"I was here to protect you. That guy was your stalker and he wanted to have your necklace. It is your father's message. It is a diamond, the rare one.

"But, my father is away. He will go home next week from Abu Dhabi." Olivia exclaimed.

"Yes, I know. He has a very challenging job. That was why he asked me to protect you."

Olivia feel down and her back was againts the wall. The hidden area looked like a cave. They would safe there for a while. "Does anyone protect my father too?"

"Yes. He is with good hands." Oscar answered. There was no gun shot sound anymore, but Oscar asked Olivia to stay until the afternoon change into night, that way, they both could slowly went out from the campus.

"I lose my chance." Olivia mumbled.

"But you are safe. That is all that matter. Besides, I believe all the campus area is forbidden for any kind of classes and event." Oscar tried to calm her down.

"I know, and thank you."

"You're welcome."

"So, our first meeting at the coffee shop that time, was it all set up?" Olivia asked and faced Oscar. Oscar nodded and sighed. Olivia smiled, "It was a good meeting. I did not know that service job was to protect me." They both smiled. Oscar blushed.

"I know, I do apologise." Oscar confirmed.

"No need to. I was thinking of having that sweet espresso tonight. Is it safe?" Olivia asked.

"I guess so." Oscar replied.

House of Tales Karya Jostein Gaarder: Kisah Cinta dalam Novel Tipis, Padat Isi
